How Florida licenses plumbers

Licensing is split between the state and local governments.

Who licenses: Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, Construction Industry Licensing Board

License types: Certified Plumbing Contractor, Registered Plumbing Contractor, Journeyman Plumber (issued by counties and municipalities).

Businesses: Plumbing contractors are licensed through the Construction Industry Licensing Board, either as a Certified contractor who may work anywhere in Florida or as a Registered contractor who may contract only in the local jurisdictions where they met competency requirements.

Local rules: Journeyman plumber licenses are issued by counties and municipalities, which must recognize journeyman licenses issued by other Florida counties and cities (s. 489.1455, F.S.).

Before you hire

Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – water heaters, repiping and sewer lines often do.
