How California licenses plumbers
Plumbers are licensed by the state.
Who licenses: Contractors State License Board (CSLB)
License types: C-36 Plumbing Contractor.
Businesses: A CSLB contractor license (the C-36 Plumbing classification for plumbing work) is required when the total cost of labor and materials on a project is $1,000 or more.
Check a license: cslb.ca.gov
Check the company's license number on CSLB's License Check to confirm it is active and carries the C-36 Plumbing classification, especially for any job of $1,000 or more.
Sources: cslb.ca.gov, cslb.ca.gov, cslb.ca.gov. Checked October 2026 from official sources. This is not legal advice.
Before you hire
Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – water heaters, repiping and sewer lines often do.
