Do plumbers need a license in Illinois?

How Illinois licenses plumbers

Licensing is split between the state and local governments.

Who licenses: Illinois Department of Public Health (Illinois Plumbing License Law, 225 ILCS 320)

License types: Licensed Plumber, Apprentice Plumber, Plumbing Contractor (registration).

Businesses: Any licensed plumber or apprentice who performs plumbing work for another person must register with IDPH as a Plumbing Contractor and renew annually, and plumbing advertisements must include the plumbing license number.

Local rules: The City of Chicago licenses plumbers itself through its Department of Buildings, and a City of Chicago plumbing contractor license is required for plumbing work inside the city even for holders of an Illinois state plumber license.

Check a license: ildohplmprod.glsuite.us

Check the plumber's license on IDPH's verification site and confirm the company is a registered Plumbing Contractor; inside Chicago, also confirm it holds a City of Chicago plumbing contractor license.

Sources: dph.illinois.gov, chicago.gov. Checked October 2026 from official sources. This is not legal advice.

Before you hire

Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – water heaters, repiping and sewer lines often do.
