How Michigan licenses plumbers

Plumbers are licensed by the state.

Who licenses: Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), Bureau of Construction Codes

License types: Master Plumber, Journey Plumber, Plumbing Contractor, Plumbing Apprentice (registration).

Businesses: Under the Skilled Trades Regulation Act (MCL 339.6107), no one may engage in the business of a plumbing contractor without a Plumbing Contractor license from LARA, and the contractor must hold or employ full-time a licensed master plumber as master plumber of record.

Check a license: michigan.gov

Use Michigan's state license search to confirm the company holds an active Plumbing Contractor license; local governments cannot issue their own plumbing licenses, so the state license is the one to check.

Sources: michigan.gov, michigan.gov, legislature.mi.gov. Checked October 2026 from official sources. This is not legal advice.

Before you hire

Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – water heaters, repiping and sewer lines often do.
