How Texas licenses plumbers

Plumbers are licensed by the state.

Who licenses: Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners

License types: Responsible Master Plumber, Master Plumber, Journeyman Plumber, Tradesman Plumber-Limited, Apprentice Registration.

Businesses: Texas has no separate plumbing contractor license; plumbing contracts are secured under a Responsible Master Plumber, a licensed master plumber who supervises the work, carries at least $300,000 of commercial general liability insurance, and may be the RMP of record for only one company at a time.

Check a license: vo.licensing.hpc.texas.gov

Always hire a licensed plumber and confirm the license on the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners' public license search before work begins.

We could not confirm every detail from Texas’s own sources, so treat this as a starting point and check with the agency.

Sources: tsbpe.texas.gov, tsbpe.texas.gov. Checked October 2026 from official sources. This is not legal advice.

Before you hire

Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – water heaters, repiping and sewer lines often do.
