Do plumbers need a license in Virginia?

How Virginia licenses plumbers

Plumbers are licensed by the state.

Who licenses: Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR), Board for Contractors

License types: Residential Plumber (tradesman), Journeyman Plumber (tradesman), Master Plumber (tradesman), Class A / B / C Contractor with Plumbing (PLB) specialty.

Businesses: Plumbing businesses need a Board for Contractors license with the Plumbing (PLB) specialty: Class C for jobs over $1,000 and under $30,000, Class B for $30,000 to under $150,000, and Class A for $150,000 or more; the individual plumbers hold separate tradesman licenses.

Check a license: dpor.virginia.gov

Look up both the company's contractor license (it should carry the PLB specialty and a class that covers your job's price) and the plumber's tradesman license on DPOR's License Lookup before hiring.

Sources: dpor.virginia.gov, law.lis.virginia.gov, law.lis.virginia.gov, law.lis.virginia.gov. Checked October 2026 from official sources. This is not legal advice.

Before you hire

Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – water heaters, repiping and sewer lines often do.
