How Washington licenses plumbers
Plumbers are licensed by the state.
Who licenses: Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I), Plumber Certification Program
License types: Journey Level Plumber (PL01), Residential Plumber (PL02), Residential Service Plumber (PL04), Pump and Irrigation (PL03), Domestic Well (PL03A), Backflow (PL30), Medical Gas Piping Installer endorsement (MG01), Plumber Trainee, Plumbing Contractor.
Businesses: Since July 1, 2021 a business must be licensed by L&I as a plumbing contractor under chapter 18.106 RCW to bid on or perform plumbing work, with a surety bond and insurance and at least one full-time employee holding a journey level plumber certificate.
Check a license: lni.wa.gov
Use L&I's Verify a Contractor, Tradesperson or Business tool to check that the company holds a plumbing contractor license and that the individual plumber is certified; Washington plumbers must carry and visibly display their certificate on the job.
Sources: lni.wa.gov, app.leg.wa.gov, app.leg.wa.gov, app.leg.wa.gov. Checked October 2026 from official sources. This is not legal advice.
Before you hire
Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – water heaters, repiping and sewer lines often do.
