How to become a plumber in Oklahoma

The license steps in Oklahoma, from apprentice to master or contractor, taken from the official licensing pages – plus pay, apprenticeships and where to apply.

The short answer

In Oklahoma you register as a plumbing apprentice and work under a licensed journeyman or contractor, qualify for the journeyman exam after three years of experience with a licensed plumbing contractor (school hours can substitute for up to two years), and need one more year of experience to qualify for the plumbing contractor license.

The steps in Oklahoma

  1. 1

    Start as an apprentice

Anyone doing plumbing work as a helper must be registered as an apprentice and directly supervised by a licensed journeyman or contractor, and registered apprentice hours count toward the journeyman experience requirement.

  2. 2

Earn your journeyman (first independent) license

The journeyman plumber license requires three years of plumbing experience while employed by a licensed plumbing contractor (an approved 1,000-classroom-hour program can substitute for two years) and an exam given by a third-party testing vendor.

  3. 3

    Master or contractor license

Oklahoma has no master plumber license; the plumbing contractor license requires meeting the journeyman requirements plus one additional year of plumbing experience.

  4. 4

    Keep your license current

Journeymen and contractors must complete six hours of continuing education within the 36 months before their license expires.

Finding an apprenticeship

Most plumbers learn the trade through a 4- or 5-year apprenticeship, with about 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training each year plus classroom instruction, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Registered Apprenticeships are paid jobs with progressive wage increases, classroom instruction and a portable, nationally recognized credential; programs are approved by the Department of Labor or a State Apprenticeship Agency. Search programs at apprenticeship.gov, or ask local plumbing contractors and union locals.
