How to become a plumber in Wyoming

The license steps in Wyoming, from apprentice to master or contractor, taken from the official licensing pages – plus pay, apprenticeships and where to apply.

The short answer

Wyoming has no statewide plumber license; in Cheyenne, the largest city, you work as a licensed apprentice, qualify for a journeyman card after four years (8,000 hours) and an exam, and qualify for master after three more years (6,000 hours) as a journeyman and an exam.

Note: Wyoming does not issue a statewide plumber license; cities or counties do. The steps below describe the largest local program we could confirm – check the rules where you will work.

The steps in Wyoming

  1. 1

    Start as an apprentice

In Cheyenne, apprentices work under the direct supervision of a licensed journeyman or master, with required supervision stepping down from 100% in year one to 25% in year four.

  2. 2

Earn your journeyman (first independent) license

Cheyenne's journeyman plumber card requires four years (8,000 hours) of documented experience as a licensed apprentice or certified equivalent training, plus a passing exam (ICC, NICET or another approved testing agency).

  3. 3

    Master or contractor license

Cheyenne's master plumber card requires the apprentice experience plus three years (6,000 hours) of documented experience as a journeyman and a passing exam.

  4. 4

    Keep your license current

Cheyenne licenses expire every year, one year from the date issued; no continuing education hours are listed for plumbers in the city rules.

Finding an apprenticeship

Most plumbers learn the trade through a 4- or 5-year apprenticeship, with about 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training each year plus classroom instruction, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Registered Apprenticeships are paid jobs with progressive wage increases, classroom instruction and a portable, nationally recognized credential; programs are approved by the Department of Labor or a State Apprenticeship Agency. Search programs at apprenticeship.gov, or ask local plumbing contractors and union locals.
