Check for a leak first

  • Meter test. The EPA says to read your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is used – if it changes at all, you probably have a leak (EPA WaterSense – Fix a Leak Week).
  • Toilets. Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank; color in the bowl after 10 minutes without flushing means a leak (EPA).
  • Why it matters. EPA WaterSense says household leaks can waste more than 9,300 gallons a year, and nine percent of homes have leaks wasting 50 gallons or more a day.
  • Call a plumber if the meter moves and you cannot find the cause, or you see damp walls, warm spots on the floor or a sound of running water.

Step by step: how to find a hidden water leak.

Questions to ask a Chicago plumber

  1. How do you locate the leak – acoustic equipment, thermal imaging, pressure tests?
  2. If it is under the slab, do you repair it, reroute the line, or both?
  3. Is the leak search priced separately from the repair?
  4. Will you document the leak for an insurance claim?

Licensing in Illinois

In Illinois, licensing is split between the state and local governments. Check a license on ildohplmprod.glsuite.us. How to hire a plumber.
