Check for a leak first
- Meter test. The EPA says to read your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is used – if it changes at all, you probably have a leak (EPA WaterSense – Fix a Leak Week).
- Toilets. Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank; color in the bowl after 10 minutes without flushing means a leak (EPA).
- Why it matters. EPA WaterSense says household leaks can waste more than 9,300 gallons a year, and nine percent of homes have leaks wasting 50 gallons or more a day.
- Call a plumber if the meter moves and you cannot find the cause, or you see damp walls, warm spots on the floor or a sound of running water.
Step by step: how to find a hidden water leak.
Questions to ask a Chicago plumber
- How do you locate the leak – acoustic equipment, thermal imaging, pressure tests?
- If it is under the slab, do you repair it, reroute the line, or both?
- Is the leak search priced separately from the repair?
- Will you document the leak for an insurance claim?
Licensing in Illinois
In Illinois, licensing is split between the state and local governments. Check a license on ildohplmprod.glsuite.us. How to hire a plumber.
